To find how many bricks a wall needs, divide the net wall area by the face area of one brick including its mortar joint, then add wastage. A 20 ft x 10 ft wall in standard GCC brick (230x115x75 mm, 10 mm joint) needs about 1,308 bricks, or 1,374 after 5% wastage.

  1. Gross area = Length x Height
  2. Net area = Gross area - (doors + windows + gates)
  3. Face area per brick = (L + joint) x (H + joint), converted to sq ft
  4. Bricks = Net area / Face area
  5. Purchase = Bricks x (1 + wastage%)
  6. Mortar = (Purchase / 1000) x 8 cu ft
  7. Dry mortar = Mortar x 1.33

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard brick size in Pakistan?

The PBQS standard brick is 9 x 4.5 x 3 inches, which is 228.6 x 114.3 x 76.2 mm. A smaller 215 x 102 x 65 mm brick is also common.

What is the standard brick size in India?

IS 1077 specifies 190 x 90 x 90 mm. With a 10 mm mortar joint the nominal size becomes 200 x 100 x 100 mm.

What is the standard brick size in the GCC?

The common GCC/Gulf brick is 230 x 115 x 75 mm. A 225 x 112 x 75 mm modular brick is also used, along with 390 x 190 x 190 mm concrete blocks.

How much wastage should I allow for bricks?

Five to seven percent is normal for straight walls. Allow ten percent for walls with many corners, openings or cut bricks.

How much mortar does 1,000 bricks need?

About 8 cubic feet of wet mortar, which becomes roughly 10.6 cubic feet dry after applying the 1.33 dry factor.
